Water is a critical part of our survival. Human beings are made up of 76% water, our blood is 84% water and blood plasma contains 96% water. Water helps to maintain the body's major functions such as elimination of waste and toxins, digestion and circulation. Cell repair and body temperature are so regulated by the amount of water present within the body. Without water, human beings will only live for around 10 days. It is the single most important thing for survival, next to air. The quality of water that we choose to drink is just as important.
The use of chemicals in the industry and agriculture has led to pollution of most water sources around the world. Chemicals and toxins have even been found in the polar icecaps and Arctic Ocean. This has significantly increased the amount of illnesses and diseases around the world as a result.
According to the EPA, there are over 700 chemicals in our drinking water. The interesting fact is that some of the most dangerous chemicals are intentionally added. Chlorine and fluoride are two of the most concerning.
Chlorine is added to water to eliminate dangerous organisms, which can make people ill. A by-product of chlorine is trihalomethanes, which accumulates in the body faster than the body can eliminate it. This build up has been linked to serious diseases such as cancer and can cause damage to the heart, lungs, kidneys and nervous system.
Fluoride was originally added to the drinking water to help reduce the incidence of tooth decay. It also has some devastating side effects such as damage to the heart, brain and kidneys. It has been linked to cancer, osteoporosis and behavioral disorders. The truth is that it makes little difference to tooth decay and the side effects far out way the benefits. Looking after our teeth is as easy as eating a good diet, daily brushing and flossing regularly and checkups at the dentist.
Drink the purest water you can find. There are many different water filters and purification methods available today, which will remove dangerous toxins and chemicals. They are affordable and easy to install. So how much water should you drink a day for great health?
