Treat It With Movement

In order to achieve the fullest well-being in our life, we must strive for a mind-body-spirit balance every day. When we focus only on one or two of the above, our well-being or health will not be fully optimized. Most of us take time to improve our mind and our spiritual being, but neglect the physical aspects of our lives. What are the effects of physical activity on our overall well-being?

Getting a good physical workout goes a long ways in reducing diabetes, high blood pressure, and many other chronic diseases. This is a fact, not just my opinion. At a recent CDC's Weight of the Nation conference in Washington, D.C., a meeting that brought together national experts on virtually every aspect of America's obesity epidemic, one panelist, Dr. Robert Sallis, a family practitioner at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles and founder of the American College of Sports Medicine's Exercise is Medicine campaign, asked: "What if there was one prescription that could prevent and treat dozens of diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity? Would you prescribe it to your patients?"

Dr. Sallis stated that "the prescription is simple: regular physical activity." He went on to say: "Getting up and assuming the vertical more often reduces mortality and the risk of recurrent breast cancer by about 50% and colon cancer by more than 60%. It reduces the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease by about 40%, lowers the incidence of heart disease and high blood pressure by 40% and reduces the risk of stroke by 27%. And type 2 diabetes? Physical activity lowers the risk of developing it by 58%. Plus you drop weight and feel great. A royal win-win-win."

In other words, exercise is medicine. I am not saying that we should not see our doctors. Matter of fact, you should consult with them before starting an exercise program. I understand that medicines are sometimes necessary, and we should follow our doctor's instructions. My point is that there are preventive actions that you can take before it gets to a point where you have to take medicines. As was stated previously, most chronic diseases can be prevented with regular physical exercise.

Although, I think that buying a stationary bike, or elliptical would be a worthwhile investment, you don't have to spend a large amount of money in order to engage in physical activity. Making exercise a part of your life can be as simple as climbing the stairs to get to your office instead of using the elevator. Researchers have found that even cleaning the house for 15-20 minutes a day can be an effective physical activity for losing weight and preventing disease. Use your imagination. There are lots of other activities that you can do on the job or around the house that involve physical movements.

We can make a thousand excuses for not exercising. However, excuses don't burn calories or prevent diseases. Let's get it done. Figure out a way to make it a part of your everyday life. That's the key. You must make exercise a part of your lifestyle. If it means joining a gym, join the gym. If it means buying a stationary bike, buy one, and use it. Get out of the boxes. Pay now, or pay later. Do whatever it takes. Be more physically active. You will be happy that you did.
