Yoga came to the attention of an educated western public in the mid 19 century along with other topics of Hindu philosophy. "Yoga" is today typically associated with Hatha Yoga and its postures as a form of exercise in the 1960's. A second "yoga boom" followed in 1980's connecting yoga to heart health.
Today there has been an emergent of studies investigating yoga as a complementary intervention for cancer patients. Yoga is used to decrease depression, insomnia, pain and fatigue and increase anxiety control. Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programs include yoga as a mind-body technique to reduce stress.
The three main focuses of Hatha yoga poses(exercise, breathing and meditation) make it beneficial to those suffering from heart disease. Overall, studies of the effects of yoga on heart disease suggest the yoga may reduce high blood pressure, improve systems of heart failure, enhance cardiac rehabilitation, and lower cardiovascular risk factors.
Long-term yoga practitioners in the United States have reported musculo, skeletal and mental health improvements. Regular yoga practice increases brain GABA levels and is shown to improve mood and anxiety.
If you question religious beliefs: Some Christians integrate yoga and other aspects of Eastern spirituality with prayer and meditation. Some fundamentalist Christian organizations consider yoga to be incompatible with their religious background.
